Students ignorant of Facebook?crimes

Many suspects turn to be people known to victims.

Visakhapatnam: The city of destiny is  fast becoming a target of cyber criminals with increasing cases of fake profiles on Facebook. Students  are not aware of  the gravity of cyber crimes, are yet to take the threat seriously. With  even school students having FB accounts, misuse of the site has been increasing in the city.

In most cases, the perpetrators create fake profiles of their friends-turned-foes and upload their morphed photographs. Officials of cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC) said that although  abusive SMSes and emails to girls and women on mobile phones and internet are on the decline due to  speedy investigation and nabbing of criminals, the rise of cyber crime-related  misuse of online social networking (Facebook and Orkut) sites are steadily increasing. Around 20 cases related to fake profiles on FB have been registered in the city.

Inspector of CCIC, B.V. Venkateswara Rao said that in some cases, the victims have no account on FB, but  someone creates a fake FB account in their name and post abusive comments and morphed photographs on the page. Few days back a PG medical student (Unani medicine) Dr Mohamamd Tajmmul Akthar, 28, was arrested by cops for harassing his former wife through a fake facebook  account.

Police said that often the suspects  turn out to be students or employees mostly  known to the victims. Additional DCP (Special Branch) Mohammad Khan said majority of netizens, till date, are not aware of the gravity of cyber crimes and are not taking cyber crimes seriously.
